Buying Copper Products Wholesale from India: The Complete Importer's Guide

Purity grades, certifications, HS codes, MOQs, and everything else you need to get it right

India is one of the world's largest producers of handcrafted copperware, with production clusters in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu supplying buyers across six continents. The range of products β€” bottles, jugs, tumblers, plates, bowls, mugs, and decorative items β€” is extensive. So is the range of quality. This guide gives you the knowledge to source confidently.

Understanding Copper Purity Grades

Copper purity is expressed as a percentage of pure copper in the alloy. For wellness and food-contact products β€” bottles, jugs, mugs β€” purity is not cosmetic; it is a health and regulatory consideration.

  • 99.9% pure copper (C11000) β€” electrolytic tough pitch copper; the standard for all food-contact copperware sold in premium markets. This grade is required for Ayurvedic copper bottle claims and for food-contact certification in EU and US markets.
  • 99.5% pure copper (C10200) β€” oxygen-free copper; suitable for decorative plates and non-contact applications where minor alloy variation is acceptable.
  • Brass (approx. 70% copper / 30% zinc) β€” a copper alloy often labelled loosely as 'copper'. Brass is not appropriate for food-contact wellness applications. Legitimate suppliers will not describe brass products as copper bottles or jugs.
  • Copper-plated β€” base metal (usually zinc or steel) with a thin copper electroplate. Significantly lower durability and completely inappropriate for food contact. Often sold as 'copper' to uninformed buyers.

Always ask for a third-party purity test certificate. A supplier confident in their product quality will provide one without hesitation. A supplier who deflects or offers instead a self-certification should be treated with caution.

PGD Quality Standards

HS Codes for Indian Copper Products

Correct HS code classification is essential for import duty calculation and customs clearance. The following codes apply to the most common copper product categories:

  • 7418.10 β€” Table, kitchen or other household articles and parts thereof, of copper (includes copper bottles, jugs, plates, bowls, mugs)
  • 7418.20 β€” Sanitary ware and parts thereof, of copper
  • 7419.80 β€” Other articles of copper (includes decorative items, figurines cast in copper alloy)

Verify the applicable duty rate for your destination country using your local customs authority portal. For EU importers, Indian-origin goods may qualify for GSP (Generalised System of Preferences) preferential tariff treatment, subject to a Certificate of Origin.

Typical MOQs and Lead Times

  • Trial/sample orders β€” 5–25 units per SKU; lead time 7–14 days
  • Standard wholesale orders β€” 50–200 units per SKU; lead time 21–35 days
  • Large bulk orders β€” 500+ units; lead time 35–60 days depending on complexity of forming and finishing
  • Custom orders (engraving, private label, bespoke dimensions) β€” additional 7–14 days on top of standard lead time

Packaging Standards for Retail and Wholesale

Copper products require protective packaging against both physical damage and oxidation during transit. Quality exporters use food-grade tissue paper lining, individual cotton muslin pouches (for premium products), and corrugated inner cartons before master carton consolidation. If you are sourcing for retail, request retail-ready packaging with product description and purity certification printed on-pack β€” this dramatically reduces destination-end preparation work.

Common Use Cases and Buyer Profiles

  • Wellness and yoga retailers β€” copper water bottles and jugs; typically stocked alongside Ayurvedic supplements, yoga mats, and natural-material wellness accessories
  • Specialty food and drink stores β€” copper Moscow Mule mugs, copper cocktail sets; high-margin gifting and kitchen accessory category
  • Hotel and hospitality procurement β€” copper welcome amenity kits (bottle + tumbler + small jug); premium in-room gift sets for luxury and boutique properties
  • Corporate gifting companies β€” copper bottle + branded cotton bag; popular executive gift with high perceived value and health narrative
  • Home dΓ©cor and lifestyle boutiques β€” copper plate sets and decorative bowls; statement kitchen and dining accessories for the premium homeware segment

Questions to Ask Every Copper Supplier

  • What is the copper purity grade and can you provide a third-party test certificate?
  • Are the products handformed or manufacturer on CNC equipment?
  • What is the interior finish of food-contact items β€” natural copper, lacquered, or tin-lined?
  • What is the minimum order quantity for a first trial order?
  • Can you provide a Certificate of Origin for import duty purposes?
  • What is your return or replacement policy for damaged or defective units?
